Short selling

Reviewed October 15, 2026

Selling borrowed shares to profit if the price falls. Banned in Korea from November 2023 to March 2025.

공매도 (gongmaedo) is short selling: selling shares you have borrowed, hoping to buy them back later at a lower price. Naked short selling (selling without borrowing first) is illegal in Korea.

Korea banned all short selling on 6 November 2023 and resumed it for all listed stocks on 31 March 2025, after introducing systems to catch illegal short selling. Daily short-selling volumes are published by the Korea Exchange.
