BNK Financial Group Reports Q3 Operating Profit Down 37.0% Year on Year

Why this report

Written after:

BNK Financial Group's preliminary Q3 2026 results show operating profit of ₩239.5B, down 37.0% from a year earlier but up 1.6% from the prior quarter. The result does not change the earlier thesis of modest returns, though it sets the new return targets against weaker earnings.

What happened

In preliminary consolidated results filed on 2026-10-26, the company reported Q3 2026 (July to September) operating profit of ₩239.5B, versus ₩380.4B a year earlier (-37.0%) and ₩235.7B in Q2 2026 (+1.6%). Pre-tax profit from continuing operations was ₩296.0B, down 26.2% year on year and up 7.5% on the quarter. Net profit was ₩217.1B, down 27.5% year on year and up 5.6% on the quarter. Profit attributable to owners of the parent was ₩210.5B, down 28.5% year on year.

For the first nine months, operating profit was ₩758.3B (-10.0%), pre-tax profit ₩854.6B (-16.7%) and net profit ₩639.5B (-18.6%). Reported revenue was ₩3.1T in Q3, up 34.9% year on year and down 13.8% on the quarter. The filing notes the figures are preliminary and may differ from final results. On the same day the company also filed a cash dividend decision and a buyback trust contract. The filings excerpted give no size for the buyback, and no earlier dividend is available for comparison. News reports on 2026-10-27 describe Q3 net profit as 6% below consensus, with one broker cutting its target price.

What it changes for the thesis

The previous report, from 2026-10-22, described a profitable holding company with modest returns (ROE 7.0% to 7.6%), high leverage and negative free cash flow, trading at a discount to book. It said the new value-up plan, with targets of ROE of at least 10.5% and a shareholder return ratio of at least 50%, gave goals but not results.

These results lean toward the cautious side of that view. Year-on-year profit is falling, which widens the distance between current returns and the 10.5% ROE target. The small quarter-on-quarter improvement shows earnings are not worsening sequentially. The dividend and buyback filings fit the plan's shareholder return direction, but the excerpts give no amounts, so we cannot judge their scale. The thesis stays mixed, with the earnings evidence now somewhat weaker.

What it changes for the valuation

The model now gives a base estimate of ₩22,959 per share, with a bear case of ₩12,004 and a bull case of ₩37,242 (excess-return method, 9.6% rate, trailing to H1 2026). The previous report had a base of ₩22,722, bear ₩11,895 and bull ₩36,800 at a 9.7% rate. The small rise comes from the slightly lower rate, not from these results, because the model uses trailing figures through H1 2026 and does not yet include Q3. This is a model estimate based on the assumptions shown, not a price target.

The shares closed at ₩13,220 on 2026-10-28, below the base estimate and within the bear-to-bull range. That is 42.6% below the 52-week high of ₩23,050, and the price is down 20.1% over one month. P/E is 5.4 (5.8 in the previous report), P/B is 0.4 and dividend yield is 5.6% (5.2% previously). Foreign ownership is 36.6%, down from 38.7% sixty days ago.

Closing view

The Q3 filing shows earnings below last year's level, with a stable quarter-on-quarter trend. Together with the news of a miss against consensus, it makes the value-up plan's ROE target look more demanding. The model range remains wide and does not yet reflect Q3, so it should be read with caution. The size of the buyback and dividend, and whether profit stabilizes, will matter more than this single quarter. None of this can be settled from the preliminary figures alone.
