Bollinger Bands

Reviewed October 15, 2026

Bands two standard deviations above and below the 20-day average; they widen when prices swing more and narrow when they're quiet.

Bollinger Bands were created by John Bollinger in the 1980s: a 20-day moving average with bands two standard deviations above and below it.

When the bands are unusually narrow (a squeeze), trading has been quiet, which often comes before a larger move in either direction. JONBUR marks a squeeze when the band width is within 10% of its narrowest in about six months.
