개미 (gaemi)

Slang for individual investors in Korea; literally 'ants'.

개미 (gaemi, 'ants') is everyday slang for individual (retail) investors in Korea. 동학개미 ('Donghak ants') became popular in 2020, when individual investors bought heavily while foreigners were selling.

Korean investor-flow data splits daily trading into individuals (개인), foreigners (외국인) and institutions (기관). Individuals make up a large share of trading, especially on KOSDAQ.
