KOSPI falls 5.4% in three sessions as foreign selling hits chipmakers; defense slides, batteries rise
KOSPI−5.4%KOSDAQ−0.1%KOSPI 200−5.8%KOSPI fell 5.4% to 6,625.93 over the three sessions. Samsung Electronics' preliminary Q3 results showed revenue of 195 trillion won and operating profit of 107.4 trillion won, its first quarter above 100 trillion won and above consensus. Even so, foreign and institutional investors sold, and Samsung Electronics ended the week down 5.1% and SK hynix down 8.7%. Sources cited oil prices, higher US yields and foreign outflows; one broker said Samsung's share buyback was nearing its end, shrinking net buying by other corporations.
Defense and space shares dropped on profit-taking after a strong run. Hanwha Aerospace fell 16.9%, LIG Defense & Aerospace 19.2% and Poongsan 17.8%. The pullback extended to shipbuilders such as Hanwha Engine (-15.5%) and HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (-10.6%). Elsewhere, Peptron fell 29.3% after its Eli Lilly platform evaluation ended without a follow-on commercial deal, while LG Energy Solution (+8.1%) and Samsung SDI (+7.6%) rose against the market.
Why the market moved
