서킷브레이커 (seokit beureikeo)

Circuit breaker

Reviewed October 15, 2026

The whole market stops trading when an index falls 8%, 15% or 20% in a day.

A circuit breaker (서킷브레이커) stops all trading on a market when its index falls sharply: if the KOSPI or KOSDAQ index is 8% below the previous close for one minute, trading stops for 20 minutes; at 15% it stops for another 20 minutes; at 20% trading ends for the day.

Each stage can be triggered only once a day. Korea's circuit breakers were triggered in March 2020 and again on 5 August 2024.
